Many of you may have noticed the library’s new display about digital footprints. If you haven’t, stop by and check it out. Some of you may be wondering, “What is a digital footprint and why does it matter?” You may have heard of the term, “carbon footprint” and know that it is the amount of carbon dioxide you emit into the environment with your activities. A digital footprint is almost the same concept, except it concerns the traces of your information and your activities that you leave in the digital or online environment.
So, let’s discuss reasons why your digital footprint matters. First and most important, your digital footprint will be seen by others and you will be judged by it. This means that if you intend on applying for cégeps, universities or employment opportunities, be prepared that your online profiles and activities will be searched and evaluated before you get hired or accepted. A way of seeing what your digital footprint looks like is to Google your name. Does the information about you help or ruin your reputation? Always think before you post anything about yourself or others. You may believe no one is watching, but actually the whole world is watching. Be careful about what you post since it will be in the digital world forever, even if you take it down later. For more information, statistics and examples of how digital footprints have affected others' lives, stop by the library and check out our display.
